Material Design WordPress Theme

Material Design WordPress Theme

You might have heard Google has been putting together a set of guidelines for web and application design called Material Design. These guidelines and principles set the baseline that web developers and designers should follow for the best user experience.

Google hasn’t released any markup or code, but there are a lot of projects online that are following there guidelines to create Material design frameworks. The one that caught my attention created a Material Design Bootstrap theme. You can see the demo here.

Since I have been building Bootstrap WordPress themes over at BragThemes.com and GentsThemes.com, I thought a Material Design WordPress Theme would be a fun project. So I put together a WordPress theme that uses the Material Design Bootstrap theme and called it MaterialWP.

If this is something you might be interested in, you can download it at MaterialWP.com or on GitHub.

Free Bootstrap WordPress Theme

Update: This post is 5+ years old. I have a ton of free Bootstrap related themes and products out on the web. Check out my GithHub page to download some free Bootstrap starter WordPress themes. I also have a course that goes over how to integrate Bootstrap into WordPress themes. You can check it out over at BootstrapWP.com.

When Bootstrap was released, I thought it would be neat if all these features were integrated into a WordPress theme. The Bootstrap toolkit has all kinds of great features:

Bootstrap is a toolkit from Twitter designed to kickstart development of webapps and sites.
It includes base CSS and HTML for typography, forms, buttons, tables, grids, navigation, and more.

The first version of this WordPress theme utilizes the Bootstrap toolkit and it is pretty slick. It includes widget areas for the homepage, footer, and sidebar. We also included the custom menu functionality and breadcrumbs on each page. You can use all the forms, layouts, tables, alerts, javascript, and all the included features that are in the Bootstrap toolkit.

Do you really need a custom design?

As a freelance web developer it is always exciting to get a client that has a nice budget and is interested in having a custom web design developed and implemented. Once the client likes the design and it is signed off on, the implementation into a CMS process takes place and normally everything runs smooth. The client has the exact look and feel they were interested in and all the features placed where they want based off the freelancers advice and knowledge.

The clients that dont have a budget to get a custom design usually settle for themes and templates, but normally end up with the same results as the client that paid more for the custom design. That brings up my question:

Do you really need a custom design?

First, let me say that I understand that businesses and companies need to have a unique look and brand. Having a unique look is what makes your target market remember and use your services whenever needed. This is a great and is exactly what branding is suppose to do.
