Google changes algorithm to list higher quality sites

The Google blog just announced that they have changed their algorithm to list higher quality websites.

This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.

This is good news for the bloggers and website owners that write and produce their own content. Writing unique content is very important when trying to rank in the major search engines and this article just stresses that fact. Not only does Google reward you for unique content, but your website is more likely to get more one way links from webmasters than other websites that just copy content, see more here to learn about the power of google stacks.

WordPress featured image link

Today I was working on a portfolio section in a WordPress site and I ran into a problem. The WordPress site was using featured images to show past work from the agency. The featured image was set up to take a large image and then WordPress would resize it to use as a thumbnail. Once you were in the portfolio section of the site, you could click the thumbnail and a lightbox would bring up the larger image for better detail of the agencies work.

The problem came about when the agency wanted to display TV and radio spots in the featured image lightbox. They still wanted to have a featured image, but when the user clicked on the featured image they wanted it to load the TV or radio spot in the lightbox. WordPress doesn’t have a feature that allows you to link a featured image to a post or anything other than the image you uploaded, so I had to come up with a solution.

Do you really need a custom design?

As a freelance web developer it is always exciting to get a client that has a nice budget and is interested in having a custom web design developed and implemented. Once the client likes the design and it is signed off on, the implementation into a CMS process takes place and normally everything runs smooth. The client has the exact look and feel they were interested in and all the features placed where they want based off the freelancers advice and knowledge.

The clients that dont have a budget to get a custom design usually settle for themes and templates, but normally end up with the same results as the client that paid more for the custom design. That brings up my question:

Do you really need a custom design?

First, let me say that I understand that businesses and companies need to have a unique look and brand. Having a unique look is what makes your target market remember and use your services whenever needed. This is a great and is exactly what branding is suppose to do.

7 new Facebook page changes and what it means for your brand

Facebook has recently made some changes to the Facebook fan pages and the new layout is going to call for some new ways of thinking. As of now you can pick to change over to the new layout or wait until March 10th for the update to be rolled out to all the fan pages automatically. I think one of the big changes to note is the fact that Facebook has chosen to go away with static FBML pages and apps. Users will now have to use iframes to build custom apps and pages within your fan page. Your static FBML pages will still work, but on March 11th you will no longer be able to add FBML apps and pages. The following is 7 new features and changes that I think are important to the new Facebook pages.

J.C. Penney black hat SEO methods

I hope everyone that is interested in SEO and how Google ranks websites for certain terms read the Times article about J.C. Penney called The Dirty Little Secrets of Search. If you are interested in how search engine optimization works, the article had a lot of great takeaways. The basis of the article is that J.C. Penney has recently been paying a third party company to get their website to show up on the first page of Google for all kinds of different search terms. The J.C. Penney website was outranking Samsonite.com for the search terms “Somsonite carry on luggage,” now that is crazy! The reason I say their website “was outranking” is because Google has recently caught on to the black hat methods that J.C. Penney was using and applied a “manual action” against J.C. Penney’s search rankings.

Built-in WordPress contact form without plugin

Brag Interactive has recently added a built-in WordPress contact form without using a plugin. Many people just add a WordPress contact form plugin, but I didn’t think that was necessary. Building the form yourself gives you complete control over the look and how it functions.

I ended up making a contact form from some resources found on Google. The first one was on catswhocode.com which gives you a basic layout and functionality.

Trying to get everything going and word cloud

We are still in the process of setting this new web design up for Brag Interactive. We are hard at work writing case studies about our previous work and adding more of our work to the portfolio section of the site. We have managed to get one of the case studies up on the site about the Online Reputation Management campaign we did for Sensibill for the right to be forgotten.

Brag Interactive found a cool web application today that generates “word clouds” from the text provided. The website is called wordle.net, here is some examples..

What exactly does a SEO ready website mean?

I see time and time again, a web development company saying the websites they develop are SEO ready or SEO friendly. As a web developer and search engine optimization strategist at spamzilla.io, this is hilarious. Half of them do not even use a keyword position checker. I think it is safe to say that every website on the internet is SEO ready and SEO friendly. I guess a web design company could develop a website that uses black hat SEO techniques that could actually hurt your websites rankings, but I don’t see why a company would do that. This would just give the web design company a bad reputation. Any good web developer should set a website up in a SEO friendly way when delivering a website to a client. There should be several things already in place that include:

  • title tags
  • meta tags
  • heading tags
  • image alt tags
